VITOZZA, THE FORGOTTEN TOWN

The abandoned village has houses which are entirely carved out of the rock now hidden in lush vegetation. Vitozza is set on the top of a tufaceous cliff of soft pliable and porous sedimentary calcium carbonate formed following the evaporation of water. It hangs over the valley of the river Lente. This walk will show you how easily nature repossesses of its belongings. From here it is possible to reach Sorano, via a 8 km long walk into the woods.

 

SOVANA: THE LAST ETRUSCAN TOWN

Walking along the two roads that make up Sovana today, it is almost impossible to understand the great importance that this town used to have. Looking carefully we can try to imagine the magnificence of the public buildings and we’ll experience a story that goes back for more than 25 centuries when the town was one of the last Etruscan headquarters in the Roman world.

 

PITIGLIANO, THE TOWN WHERE PRE-ROMAN WORLD AND MIDDLE AGES ARE ONE

A day exploring the less known but most inspiring but truest side of Pitigliano, the world famous hilltop town. We’ll walk along the medieval interconnecting narrow streets in the city centre, with its houses porched on a spur of tuff, and view the amazing Etruscan excavated road.

 

ETRUSCAN HIKE: FROM PITIGLIANO TO SOVANA 

Full day trek 

A scenic walk between the hill-top villages of Pitigliano and Sovana are two of the most acclaimed towns of Southern Tuscany. The windy path follows roads, excavated into the rock dozens of centuries ago by the Etruscans. We’ll walk several meters deep into the earth, into the woods, over small rivers, across ancient sacred areas and medieval urban roads. Experience a day surrounded by both history and nature.

 

BOSCO MONUMENTALE DEL SASSETO – TORRE ALFINA

A day in the unspoiled nature of this green sanctuary: Sasseto wood is one the few pristine environments in the whole central Italy. The winding paths, lined less than a century ago, will lead us to heart of an enchanted forest, where elves and fairies are believe to hide.

 

RING OF THE ORVIETO AND THE CLIFF

Orvieto, known as the jewel of Umbria or the green heart of Italy is a breath-taking town, surrounded by green valleys and a wide variety of views. The walk along the tufaceous rock where the city lies is an unusual way to visit Orvieto: let’s go off the beaten track to discover the history of this town, layer after layer. We will encounter traces of the Etruscan civilization, the middle age buildings with the famous Cathedral and the Renaissance houses. Three thousand years of history in a nature walk.

 

CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO, THE DYING TOWN 

Half day trek

Known as the “dying town”, Civita di Bagnoregio is one of the most evocative towns of the central Italy. The town lies in the middle of the “calanchi” valley, set on a tufaceous rock based on a layer of clay. There have been tragic landslides from the leaching of this rock. The town has been slowly eroded during the centuries, with just a few buildings remaining of the vivid centre it used to be. Strolling over the long pedestrian bridge that is the only way to reach the it, we will discover a town relieved from the past.

 

THE HOLY WOOD OF BOMARZO 

Half day trek 

Take a guided tour among the stunning and odd sculptures carved out of huge volcanic outcrops which populate this unique, picturesque park. The “Holy Wood” of Bomarzo is a very peculiar park in the neighbourhood of Viterbo set up with dozens of sculptures shaped as sea monsters, giants, ogres, fountains or exotic animals, all created in the 16th century.

 

VULCI, WHERE HISTORY MEETS NATURE

A guided tour to the Roman-Etruscan town. We enjoy a walk amidst verdant fields, a green river, and grazing cattle.

 

TARQUINIA AND PAINTED TOMBS

The Necropolises of Tarquinia and Cerveteri, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, represent a unique witness of the ancient Etruscan civilization, the only urban civilization of the pre-Roman age. The frescoed tombs are a one-of-a-kind testimony of the Etruscan culture.

 

HERMITAGES ON THE RIVER FIORA

The steep valley of the River Fiora hides a few rupestrian hermitages, carved out of the rock centuries ago. These small houses and churches were created by hermit monks who fled from the towns and found refuge in the middle of the woods, living on what nature provided. They left behind only those shrines, so deep in the woods that are revealed only to those who know where to look for them.
